N yk and I talked for another hour, and he told me more about the work heâd been doing for and with Goldie. Annie fell asleep in the middle of it, so that by the time the big man shrugged out of his filthy clothes and drifted off in the other bed, I had to retreat to the separate room. I left the connecting door open.
I managed to get three hours of sleep before I woke to a mind that was racing. My eyes were gritty, and I was feeling worn down from too many long nights over the last week combined with using too much of the coinâs power, but I knew I wasnât going to get more sleep.
When I padded into the other room, Nykâs bed was empty and I heard the shower running. It somehow made me feel better to know I wasnât the only one who couldnât sleep for long. I followed his lead, heading to the other roomâs bathroom to take a shower and change out of clothes that were filthy from trudging through the swamp. I didnât bother putting the jeans and t-shirt in my âdirty clothesâ bag, I just tossed them in the trash can. I wanted to do the same with my shoes, but I hadnât brought another pair. I had to settle for holding them under the faucet to try and flush out the swamp mud.
Annie pushed through as I opened the bathroom door, forcing me back against the sink as she wrapped her arms around me and leaned her head against my chest. âYou smell good,â she mumbled in a sleep-roughened voice. âClean.â
âUh, thanks. Iâm done in here, so you can jump in the shower.â
She smiled up at me. âToo bad I didnât wake up earlier. We could have shared.â
I opened my mouth, then closed it when I couldnât think of how to respond to that. She winked and released me. As she started pulling off her clothes, I beat a hasty retreat. Cursing myself all the while for not knowing how to handle situations like that better. In my head, an imaginary conversation played out where I spouted suave lines that melted her heart and ended with a romp in the shower.
Nyk was looking through my bag, grumbling. He was wearing only a towel around his waist that looked several inches short of modesty. âYou should pack bigger clothes.â
âYou should be smaller,â I countered. âI saw a gift shop when we checked in. Let me go down and see if they have anything in your size.â
When I returned ten minutes later with a cheesy Hawaiian-style shirt with alligators and voodoo dolls on it along with a pair of paisley shorts, Annie was out of the bathroom and talking to Nyk as she dried her hair. I felt seriously overdressed as I looked at both of them wearing only towels.
âBest I could find,â I said as I tossed the bag to Nyk. He looked at the clothes with a frown before he went into the other room to change.
